The continent of Africa is as wondrous as it is plentiful–boasting a wealth of the most beautiful places, natural wonders and wildlife in the world. For nature lovers, it bodes a euphoric high–- from the swelling hills and neverending plains, to the colorful flora nestled within the bush. In the wake of the New Year, if global travel is calling your name–and particularly a visit to the Motherland–here’s one of the land’s best-kept secrets you must add as a to-do, especially if the country of South Africa is on your itinerary.
To date, South Africa boasts many of the top-visited landmarks and tourist destinations: the Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu houses in Soweto; the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg; Cape Point in Cape Town; the South African penguins at Boulders Beach; and so much more. However, the true beauty of South Africa is beholden within the folds of its townships, the many languages of its people, and the picturesque drives offered throughout the country.
The Panorama Route
Quite popular amongst the locals and many seasoned tour guides is The Panorama Route–a breathtakingly scenic car route in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. With some of the most beautiful views one could witness, this is one road trip worth staying awake for. While flights are available from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo Airport to the Mpumalanga Province, it is highly recommended to drive the 3+ hour distance from Johannesburg to Mpumalanga, for a chance to marvel at the essence of all that South Africa has to offer. The best time to travel to this beauty is during the winter months, between May and August.
While the Panorama Route and its multiple viewpoints can be visited within a day, the true magic awaits in the gift of time. Sit back, relax, and allow the land to unveil itself to you, day by day. As you begin along the route, the majestic shift between landscapes will beckon you. Gaze in bewilderment, and even roll the windows down to listen to the songs of paradise. As you climb through the mountains, waterfalls will begin to peek, becoming more prevalent as you wind your way through the province.
Lisbon Falls
Lisbon Falls is one of many waterfall stops along the route, just north of Graskop. It touts some of the highest waterfalls in the Mpumalanga region. Multiple places to stand, sit and marvel are available at the falls, as well as areas for photo opps. Resist the urge to rush through this destination. Move mindfully from one end of the platform to the other–even going where the steps may lead you, to truly soak in this wonder.
Blyde River Canyon Nature Preserve
As you continue along your journey, the Blyde River Canyon Nature Preserve will come into view. It is one of the third largest canyons on the Earth, behind the Grand Canyon and Fish River Canyon. With various scenic points, the upper canyon unfolds before your eyes to reveal waters within the distance, rushing waters below, and various greenery, flora and fauna from the east to the west. “Let there be…let there be,” one visitor commented, as he looked ahead with his family in awe. “It is completely untouched. Just let there be,” he said. Take a seat on one of the rocks perched nearby, and just experience nature at its finest. Allow it to consume you.
The Three Rondavels
Not too far from this view, is the Blyde River Canyon rock formation called the “Three Rondavels”. Named after the African-style houses called “rondavels”, the three grass-covered mountain tops are but a preview to what else lies within this scenic point. As your gaze moves from cliff to cliff, hike minimally along the trail to view the river canyon below, and other waters within the distance. “This is by far one of my most favorite places to photograph in the world–and I travel for a living,” a Russian travel photographer commented. Whether a travel pro or a tourist, even the locals would agree.
Other popular destinations along the route include God’s Window, Berlin Falls, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. It is even said that there are cruises offered that travel along the river canyon. If you are looking to add this to your South Africa itinerary, do so with leisure, flexibility, and time. Lodging is available in Mbombela, Sabie, or popularly within Graskop (all along the main route), so that you are able to truly experience what lies beyond the typical South African destinations. Upon your departure, there will undoubtedly be no question why this region is often a hidden gem, but a must to those well-traveled.
