Amongst the tree-lined strip of resorts in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, lie two all-inclusive properties by Wyndham – Viva Azteca and Viva Maya. For the traveler wanting their cake and eating it too, a simple booking at one (and a 5-minute walk) unlocks the key to two family-friendly, all-inclusive experiences, for the simple price of one.

Following an hour-long drive from the Cancun airport, I arrived at Viva Azteca. Ascending up the steps, I was immediately hugged by a soft, gentle breeze that whispered its way through the open-air lobby. After taking the first sip of my welcome mocktail, I glanced around and soaked in the natural delights of wooden decor, bamboo reeds, and plants-a-plenty. Not too far in the distance was an outdoor patio, enveloped by trees and adorned with a rippling fountain–a place I could easily imagine unwinding with a cocktail or two. Alas, a pinch of paradise.

A stay at Viva Azteca allows for all-inclusive access to its sister property Viva Maya (and vice versa), which is a short distance down the road with entirely separate amenities and personalities. Harboring two distinctive vibes (Azteca as more intimate and relaxed; Maya as more livelier and vibrant) and aesthetics, the resorts allow travelers to explore a wealth of options across beachfronts, dining and activities, making a stay at either resort, the ultimate play for vacay, and the best bang for any buck.

“This hotel is near the downtown area of Playa del Carmen,” said Alexis Lopez, the Guest Service Agent at Viva Azteca. “There are plenty of resorts in this area but most of them are far from the downtown area or far from other places that are important for tourism.” He added, “My favorite part about Viva Azteca [however] is the cenote,” said Alexis, “There you’ll find the Aztec calendar and it’s in one of the main places at the resort, and one of the reasons why it’s named ‘Azteca’. It’s really important to me as well, because it’s a part of my culture.”

The cenote is the first of many breathtaking views at Azteca–one that you are likely to miss if you’re not paying attention. I happened to catch it as I was following the bellhop, and immediately paused to soak it all in. The Mayan-inspired architecture, colonial fixtures and stone-walled walkways were enough to press pause, breathe, and simply marvel. As we continued, a replica of the Mayan ruins slowly faded into view—a natural, statuesque work of art, situated stoically in the center of the property, operating as Azteca’s North Star.

This all-inclusive resort is more than just the quintessential Mexico appeal of tequila, beaches, and guac–it’s an homage to culture, art, and an affordable way to experience more of what Playa Del Carmen has to offer. From mariachi bands at sunset, to authentic Mexican cuisine, both Viva properties bode well for the traveler looking for a two-for-one all-inclusive vacation, or a “Stay At 1, Play At 2” benefit, that will keep one entertained and nourished, all in one stay.

THE ROOMS

Viva Azteca’s guest rooms are spacious with an open concept—one that allows for more natural sunlight to fill the space. With a minimalistic design, the focus turns to the carpentry that gives nods to Mayan influence. Rooms can boast either garden, poolside or ocean views, with peeks of tropical forestry, natural landscaping, and the pleasurable sounds of paradise.

I was welcomed officially with a mound of fresh fruit, local Mexican snacks and crisp champagne upon entry to my second-floor room with poolside views. The terrace was beckoning, so I drew back the curtains as wide as I could to soak in views of the bustling “Cenote Bar”, manicured garden and towering trees. Towel swans in the shape of a heart adorned the bed—an act of service that playfully continued throughout the duration of my stay. I grew to wonder every evening, which animal would grace my sheets nightly after every turndown service.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

There are a total of seven à la carte restaurants between Azteca and Maya, giving travelers a taste around the world, spanning Italy to the Mediterranean, to the Americas, down to authentic Mayan and Mexican cuisines. There are four buffet-style options, with two being easily accessible poolside.

I primarily dined on the Azteca side, and would faithfully begin my mornings at Buffet El Nopal double-fisting a pair of orange juice mimosas and a coffee. Eventually the waitstaff would thoughtfully remember my morning routine and the mimosas would arrive daily—without delay. Although there were a myriad of international options for breakfast, it was always the chilaquiles that stole my plate (and my heart). Pile on the fresh tamales, chorizo, corn tortillas and more—and we have an authentic recipe that satiates more than just the stomach, but also the spirit.

Between meals, a pick-me-up at Cafe Jaguar was always in order for iced chai lattes, mini confections and a sip-and-see convo. Alternatively, the Cenote Bar (directly outside of Jaguar) was the hotspot for guests with both ocean and pool views, spotlighting a buffet of fresh-grilled hamburgers, loaded nachos, chicharrones, and fries.

Forget desserts, dinner was always the treat. At Azteca, the à la carte dining stole the show. While Asian restaurant Bamboo and Italian restaurant Il Palco were delicious runner-ups, it was the exotic Mayan cuisine at Xul-Ha that took home the crown. Nestled in a jungle-inspired, makeshift hut, every sip and every bite was welcomed by the sounds of tropical leaves and the songs of nature, in an atmosphere that seems otherworldly. Everything was to be savored, from the K’aab Yucatan chicken soup, to the unquestionable favorite: Salbutes—a set of fried corn dough flats adorned with chicken, red onion, lettuce, tomato and avocado. Needless to say, I wish I had ordered more.

The cuisine across Azteca was diverse, and one that I anticipated each day of my stay. The explosion of culinary flavors are not discussed enough at these properties, and should be the top selling points—especially for those who fear that they will sacrifice great dining for an affordable all-inclusive stay. These Viva properties seem to have it all, and prove that exceptional food and experiences can both fare true at the same time.

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS

From sunrise to sunset, both Azteca and Maya offer a range of activities that keeps guests engaged all day long. As easy as a click on the app, a day filled with beachfront yoga, cooking classes, poolside painting, and water aerobics are right at one’s fingertips. Relaxing days at the beach are a given, with VIP guests enjoying premium access and reserved lounge chairs beachside.

During the day, it was the energetic vibes of the water aerobics class that caught my attention. The contagious personalities of the instructors paired with the high-intensity music made for one of the best experiences at Azteca. It felt like less of a workout and more of a party—with healthier benefits, of course. Following the “workout”, I trekked back to the Cenote Bar for a libation, and ended up enamored with a cooking class teaching guests the art of ceviche. Utilizing fresh fish, produce and lime, I was happy to offer up a tasting to ensure that the delicacy was flavored to perfection.

Perhaps the most memorable of experiences was “Mexico Night” which included local vendor shopping, and an overflowing buffet of tamales, empanadas, guacamole, street tacos, fajita meats, and more. I opted to dine outdoors—soaking up the fresh breeze, and gazing into the night sky as I sipped a cool cocktail, and eased into the sweet serenade by the mariachi band.

For an offsite excursion, we opted for a day in Tulum—exploring the infamous temples and walls, and ending with authentic cuisine and dips at the Canamayte Cenotes and Ecopark. There were a number of other excursions Viva offered from snorkeling to boat adventures to a Mexico tour—however, a panoramic view from the tops of the “walled city” was fervently calling my name.

SELF-CARE | THE SPA

One of the more surprising and alluring highlights of the stay was the Necui Spa at Azteca. Small but mighty, this tranquil haven hosts a wealth of services, including a mini hair and nail salon, in addition to various spa treatments. I enjoyed a much-needed massage that varied between pressures, but swiftly whisked me to sleep. The experience was so transformative that I rebooked for another day, however, at the manager’s hest, I signed up for a deep tissue Herbal Poultice Massage. I guess I really needed it.

The poultice is a Thai herbal compress in the shape of a mushroom, harboring natural herbs like lemongrass, patchouli, eucalyptus, turmeric and other healing remedies on the inside. Once heated, the herbs help to massage the muscles, detox the body and relieve tension. A massage that not only feels amazing, but smells incredible, too? Sign me up—again.
