It was the day the Earth stood still on January 10, as news rapidly spread of cultural icon and music legend, David Bowie’s passing. The 69 year-old English singer, songwriter, and producer lost his long battle to cancer, but his stamp on the world of music, culture, and style will forever live on.
Just up on the 58th season of The GRAMMY’s, the Recording Academy has announced that six-time GRAMMY award winner, current nominee, and long-time David Bowie fan, Lady Gaga, will pay tribute to the late singer through an experiential tribute.
Pairing down Bowie’s hits to a three or four song compilation will prove tough, but the no-holds-barred Gaga will afford fans across the globe an opportunity to come together, once again, in celebration of the icon’s life and incredible artistry.
“We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year’s show, but when David passed ā almost in a single moment ā we knew we had to change direction,” said executive producer of the GRAMMY Awards Ken Ehrlich. “We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honor David. She’s perfect for it. So I reached out to Nile and, before long, we were on our way to creating what we believe will not only make a great GRAMMY Moment, but one befitting of David.”
The musical director for Lady Gaga’s tribute will be three-time GRAMMY award winner Niles Rodgers, who also has a long history with Bowie — dating all the way back to “Let’s Dance,” the chart-topping 1983 hit that commenced the lifelong friendship between the two.
Aside from the highly anticipated tribute,Ā this will mark Gaga’s fourth appearance on the GRAMMY’s along with her personal nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Til It Happens To You” with Diane Warren.
Hip-hop icon LL Cool J is slated to host The GRAMMY awards once again with star-studded appearances and performances by Adele, James Bay, Andra Day, Kendrick Lamar, Carrie Underwood, The Weeknd, and more.
