Master Chef Tiffany Derry and owner of the DFW cult favorite Roots Chicken Shak, has dished up a new restaurant, Roots Southern Table (RST), that officially opened its doors June 18th. Nestled at Mustang Station in Farmers Branch, the new edition to the Roots family is an elevated spin to Derry’s prior concepts, offering a burst of Southern culinary flavors, coupled with global dining influences from the Emmy award-nominated chef.
Derry, who grew up on the farm, pays homage to her upbringing through RST, with robust international flavors, scratch-made recipes, and ingredients sourced from the region’s best purveyors — many who are independent or minority-owned.
“My grandmother was cooking field-to-table before it was a trend, and always welcomed guests with food. The dinner table was the heart of our family where we’d gather for special occasions over fried chicken, fish-fries, and crawfish boils,” says Derry. “Inspired by my culinary roots, this concept is something I’ve been cooking up for years and I’m thrilled to introduce it to Dallas.”
While her infamous duck fat fried chicken undoubtedly made the menu, other hot picks include the Cast-Iron Cornbread — fluffy, warm and topped with Steen’s syrup, smoked salted butter, and preserves; Tiffany’s Mother’s Gumbo — basking with chicken, Zummo sausage, Louisiana shrimp and herb rice; the Crawfish Boil Ravioli — with crawfish tails, Zummo sausage, corn and herbs; and the Inspire N Style Magazine favorite, the jerked lamb over hoppin’ john — tender, flavorful and spiced to perfection.
Wash it all down with the Southern-inspired Kool-Aid Cocktail (vodka, hibiscus tea, strawberry, dry curacao, lemon and pounded sugarcane), and you’re bound to feel the comforts of what Derry would call home.
Roots Southern Table is located at 13050 Bee Street, Suite 160, Farmers Branch, TX 75234. The restaurant will be open initially for dinner from 5pm to 10pm, Tuesday through Sunday, with brunch and lunch service to follow.
