On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic earthquake hit the small nation of Haiti, leaving the country impoverished and destitute with lost hope for recovery. Although aid to Haiti was immediate, many have moved on to other disaster-ridden places as Haiti continues to pick up the pieces daily, still six years later. Understanding the meaning of true commitment, Macy’s continues to make a difference in Haiti through its ongoing efforts via its Heart of Haiti program.
Currently, over 550 artisans participate in Macy’s Heart of Haiti initiative which allows them to develop goods to be bought and purchased through Macy’s and a few select stores, inevitably creating income for the earthquake victims and their families. Although many organizations have come and gone, Inspire N Style salutes Macy’s for staying true to the cause six years later.
Several months ago we shed spotlight on a festive and decorative Heart of Haiti vase that now adorns our Editor’s home. Swoon. Now, we’ve fallen in love with a line of Heart of Haiti metal bowls and baskets handcrafted specially in the town of Croix-des-Bouquets by acclaimed artisans who have perfected the metaling technique over many years.
Meet Pierre Michele Dorestant (pictured right), a Heart of Haiti participant and skilled artisan who is able to feed his family and send his children to school through the sales of these bowls. Using a unique skill set, artisans such as Dorestant, forge these bowls out of recycled oil barrels, pounding out the intricate designs and creating what is now available through Macy’s and its store.
An excellent cause for social giving, and more widely known as a non-charity but “trade-for-aid” initiative, these Heart of Haiti gems, such as the metal bowls, fare well for home or office decor, or for cultural table dressings.
